Before you start drafting your next grant proposal, take a breath.
You’ve got a compelling mission, a hardworking team, and big goals. But is your organization really grant-ready?
Grant readiness is one of the most overlooked, but mission-critical elements of a successful funding strategy. Funders today expect more than a strong idea or a moving story. They want to see infrastructure, alignment, and accountability.
That’s where a grant readiness assessment comes in.
What Is a Grant Readiness Assessment?
Think of it as a pre-flight checklist for your funding journey.
A grant readiness assessment is a structured way to evaluate how prepared your organization is to identify, pursue, and manage grant funding. It covers everything from governance documents and financial systems to outcome measurement and compliance capacity.
Skipping this step can lead to:
Rushed or ineligible applications
Gaps in financial documentation
Missed deadlines
Low funder confidence
But when you’re truly grant-ready, you can focus your energy where it matters most: writing stronger proposals and building relationships with funders.
The 6 Core Areas of Grant Readiness
Here’s what we look for when helping our clients assess their readiness. Use this list as a DIY guide, or download our full checklist to dive deeper.
✅ 1. Organizational Background
Do you have a clear narrative of your organization’s history and purpose?
Is your mission, vision, and DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access) statement up to date?
Can you quickly articulate your target population, service area, and annual reach?
This is your foundation. Funders want to understand not just what you do, but why it matters, and for whom.
✅ 2. Governance & Leadership
Is your Board of Directors list complete with affiliations and demographics?
Do you have a current strategic plan and an organizational chart?
Are executive bios and compensation documentation available?
This shows that your org is well-structured, transparent, and guided by a clear plan for growth.
✅ 3. Financial Infrastructure
Can you provide a detailed organizational budget and recent financial statements?
Are your audits and IRS 990s from the last three years ready to go?
Do you track and report on multiple funding streams?
Strong financials help demonstrate fiscal responsibility and reassure funders that their investment will be in good hands.
✅ 4. Program & Project Readiness
Can you clearly describe your programs and who they serve?
Do you have recent impact data, success stories, and documentation of community need?
Are your logic models or theories of change defined?
A funder should never have to guess how your work makes a difference.
✅ 5. Compliance & Legal Documentation
Do you have your W-9, tax-exempt letter, and (if needed) SAM registration?
Are your articles of incorporation, bylaws, and policies and procedures current?
Do you have MOUs, letters of support, or contracts from key partners?
These are often non-negotiable in public and private sector grant applications.
✅ 6. Evaluation & Outcomes
Are you actively tracking outcomes from your programs?
Can you demonstrate how grant dollars have translated into real impact?
Do you have a corporate compliance or performance improvement plan?
Funders don’t just want to support good intentions; they want measurable results.
